A bed valance fits over the divan base and underneath your mattress. A valance sheet (or fitted valance), fits over your mattress and bed base. It's essentially a fitted bed sheet with a valance attached

How to Choose the Right Tailored Bed Skirt

Measurement

Make sure your measurements are correct. It's always a good idea to run around the bed with a tape measure just to ensure you get the correct size valance.

Fabric

Most bed valances come in poly cotton fabrics with cheaper ones at a lower thread count. A goo start point for your fabric is to look for 200 thread count or higher.  This grade of fabric will be smooth and last longer.

When your starting your search make sure you get samples of the fabric to ensure you get great coverage. Higher thread counts will block out more light and make you valance less see through. You will get even better coverage if you choose a heavy fabric valance, where upholstery fabric is used for a more substantial look.

Color

Take into account your bedroom colours and again getting a fabric swatch is always a good idea. Most online retailers will send you one free of charge.

Valance Frill

Probably one of the most important aspects of your valance, you don't want a valance frill that is too long or too short. Double check your measurement from the top of your divan to the floor, most valance drops finish approx. 1cm from the floor. If you have a deep pile carpet you might also want to take this into account.
