Longer and Larger Pillows

Longer & Larger Pillows and Pillow Cases
Longer & Larger Pillows and Pillow Cases

As beds become longer and larger so have customers demands for a pillow to fit. As standard pillows all come in the set size of 50 x 75cm this is all very well for standard size beds but as bigger and wider beds become more popular these pillows can seem lost on the bed, or you’ll need more and more of them across the width of the bed. As part of our service to customers with larger beds Victoria Linen also stock a range of pillows ideal to fit beds such as 3’6″ width, 5’6″ all the way up to 7′ width beds. We stock 92 x 50cm Pillows (36 x 19″), which are ideal for wider singles and for beds fo 6′ (183cm) width for example. We also stock 104 x 50cm (42 x 19″) which again are ideal for 4′ (48cm) beds and also 7′ (214cm) and beyond!

Ikea Bed Sheets – What are the sizes and where to find them??

Find ikea bed sheets online

Ikea is world renowned for its innovative and eye catching designs, the place is full of ideas to give your entire bedroom a modern new look. You can hit problems in however when you buy ikea beds, especially if you live in the UK.

Ikea beds or mattresses can come in standard UK Single, Double, and King sizes but they are also available in larger single (1m width or 3’3″) and larger kingsize (160cm or 3’3″) sizes.

Check below to see there size range:

IKEA Small single (80 x 200cms)

IKEA Single (90 x 200cms)

IKEA Double (140 x 200cms)

IKEA King (160 x 200cms)

IKEA Super King (180 x 200cms)

UK retailers and supermarkets tend to only sell bedding in standard UK sizes (UK single, double, king and super king) so finding ikea bed sheets can be a difficult task. Sure, you can buy them at an ikea store but some stores might be miles from where you live.  Also, you may be looking for more than what Ikea have to offer, (there colour range and fabric choice can be limited.

Ikea also offer mattress toppers that lay on top of the mattress and can increase the mattress depth up to 13 inches.  For these it would always be best to buy a bed sheet that is deep enough to accommodate the topper and your mattress.

All the above sizes can cause a problem when trying to find fitted sheets and other bedding that fits correctly. UK retailers primarily only deal with standard single, double, king and superking sizes.

Luckily, companies like Victoria Linen offer a made to measure service in bed linen where the fabric is cut and sewn to the customers exact requirements.

The sheets are available in easy care poly cottons in a range of colours including grey, stone, black, ivory, white, duck egg and many more.  All the fabrics used are easy care or high quality 100% Cotton with 200, 400 or 1000 thread counts.

Why can’t you get duvets in larger sizes?

Egyptian bedding sheetsAs is the tradition with beds and bedding, the general rule is that you can only have four sizes of duvet: Single, Double, King & Super king. At Victoria Linen we try to buck this trend at every opportunity, we believe that beds and bed linen should be made to fit the customer and we know that they come in more than four sizes! We stock duvets in a range of sizes that fit the most popular in-between sizes of beds, these include:

137 x 214cm to fit 92 x 200cm (3’x6’6″) beds
153 x 214cm to fit 107 x 200cm (3’6″x6’6″) beds
168 x 214cm to fit 122 x 200cm (4’x6’6″) beds
280 x 234cm to fit 214 x 214cm (7′ x 7′) beds

If none of these duvet sizes can fit we can have the appropriate size made up so that duvet is the perfect size. All our duvets are made with 100% cotton casings and come in Hollofibre, Duck Feather & Down or Goosedown fillings.

As the market for outsized and inbetween beds grows so has the demand for these sizes of duvet and we think it will continue as the market grows.

Why do bed linens for Adjustable beds need to be different?

As a company, we at Victoria Linen have been manufacturing bed linens to fit larger and adjustable beds for over 15 years. We are often asked the question, “why do linens for my adjustable bed have to be different?” . Most people who purchase these beds dont realise it at the time but standard linens bought from the supermarket will not stay on these beds once they start to move. Mass produced bed linens are made to fit only standard single, double, king and kingize beds, these are usually 3′ x 6’3″, 4’6″ x 6’3″, 5′ x 6’6″ and 6′ x 6’6″ sizes respectively and usually with a mattress depth of around 5″.

Adjustable beds contain a lot of mechanics for moving the bed and these are housed in the base, because of this they tend to be slightly longer (a standard single adjustable bed is 3′ x 6’6″ for example) so standard linens will not fit, the mattress also will tend to be between 8 and 10 inches in depth, a lot deeper than a standard bed.

Linens for these types of beds need to be made to measure and also need to be elasticated all the way round. At Victoria Linen we ensure all sheets and mattress protectors are made with extra deep corners to accomodate the mattress as well as elastication all the way round to hold it in place when the bed is moving.

Why we should all have bigger beds

The Sleep Council recommends that a bed should be 6-8in longer than the sleeper.

A standard double bed (135cm/4ft 6in) gives each person just 2ft 3in of space, less than a baby in a cot.

The average adult grows in the night by as much as two centimetres. During the day the spine is compressed; at night it is given the chance to straighten and recover.

Ergonomic studies show that couples sleep better in a bigger bed. Before trials only 15% said they would buy a larger than standard bed. After the trial 50% said they would.

By the time we are 50 we’ll each have spent some 16 years in bed. 16 other countries have bigger average bed sizes than Britain. Top of the league are Belgium, Greece, Holland, Iceland, Finland and Switzerland where most people sleep in a roomy 160cm by 200cm bed. By contrast we Brits still have to put up with an average bed size of 135cm by 190cm.

The average person tosses and turns some 60 to 70 times a night so you want to put as much space between you and your partner as possible to reduce the disturbance factor.

Manufacturing bed linens to fit non standard size beds

Finding linens for bed’s that dont fall into the standard single, double or king size categories can prove to be difficult. Looking at any typical bed store or even the local supermarket you will always find standard size linens in abundance but with todays customers demanding beds that better complement there lifestyle they also need the bed linens to fit. Beds are now available from many manufacturers in a massive range of sizes. Some of these are made shorter, maybe to better fit into smaller rooms, while a growing number of the market are now producing bigger beds as demand grows for larger beds as luxury items. These beds can range from as small as 69cms width to as wide as 2.5 metres so finding bed linens once you have one of these beds can prove a real challenge. Victoria Linen was set up in 1989 as a manufacturer to the adjustable bed industry but since then and with the massive growth in the outsized bed market we have also adapted our manufacture to include making everything you would need for the non standard size bed. We manufacture mattress protectors, fitted sheets, flats sheets as well as non standard duvets and duvet covers that will all enchance and complement your new bed perfectly!

Finding a Valance to fit your Adjustable bed

Finding a valance to fit your adjustable bed
Finding a valance to fit your adjustable bed

One of the most frequent enquiries we get at Victoria Linen is for valances that will cover the workings of an adjustable bed. With most makes the machinery of an adjustable bed is held in the base. A valance can cover over these moving bars and also finish off the bed when it is back in its standard position. Victoria Linen manufacture these valances in our factory in Lancs UK. We make valances that are made to fit the moving board on some types of bed, such as the Craftmatic and Adjustamatic models, these valances fit under the mattresses and hold on when the bed is moving. They also come with a seperate cover for the footboards at the foot of the bed. Other adjustable beds have slatted wooden parts that move the bed, for these we produce a velcro attached valance that will fit neatly around the base of the bed and do not interfere with the workings of the bed.

My Bed, My Marriage Counselor

For all those long-suffering spouses who have spent entire marriages wishing they could humanely silence their snoring partners, Prodigy provides the answer: the anti-snore button.

The one-touch, anti-snore technology allows the user to articulate the sleep position of a snoring partner by seven degrees to open the nasal passages, which can alleviate mild to moderate snoring. After thirty minutes, the bed gently returns the sleeper to the original sleep position, whatever it may be.

Another feature sure to curb bedroom battles is a gentle-wake alarm system that softly massages the sleeper awake. Because Prodigy can work on dual twin mattresses, each sleeper can be awakened individually, perfect for couples who can’t agree on a common wake time or a unified snooze-button strategy.

And for the millions of Americans who awaken at 2 a.m. to find they’ve fallen asleep in the recliner (once again), Prodigy provides a spouse-approved solution. A built-in sleep timer automatically sets the bed from an active position to a sleeping position, so users can recline in bed and skip the early morning, toe-stubbing walk from recliner to bedroom.

Couples losing sleep over stolen covers can benefit from Prodigy’s dual temperature-controlled surface. Using liquid-based Peltier technology, the mattress can be set to “pre-heat” or “pre-cool” both sides of the bed from 68 degrees to 117 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s a boon to both menopausal women suffering from hot flashes and to couples who can never agree on the same temperature.

An Apple a Day

Outside of its advanced sleep features, Prodigy’s operation also takes it to a Jetsonian era with a WiFi remote control featuring LED screen. But if WiFi isn’t hi-fi enough for users, they can command multiple bedroom electronics including television, lighting and the bed itself using an iPhone or iPod Touch application, which acts as universal remote.

On the Horizon

Alongside Prodigy, Leggett will debut two additional concept models, complete with a series of undisclosed features never before seen in adjustable beds. Leggett will use feedback and insights from retailers to further develop these high-tech adjustables.

Considering that everything from home entertainment options to car settings are moving towards personal customization, perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate the more modern applications of the adjustable bed.

“Prodigy’s features only touch the surface of what adjustable beds can do,” said Quinn. “Leggett is leading the initiative to bring technology, comfort and personal customization to adjustable beds in an entirely new way. We’re creating an experience for the consumer that’s completely unexpected.”
