Bed Linen: The Flat Sheet

The Flat Sheet
Custom Flat Sheets

Remember Goldilocks and her adventures with the Three Bears? She broke into the bears’ home, ate their dinner, rested in their chairs, and finally fell asleep in the bed of the Baby Bear. Wonder if it had anything to do with the sheets? I’d be willing to bet she was sleeping in a custom made bed with a fitted sheet that stayed on the mattress and a flat sheet that was the proper size.
Flat sheets, also known as “top sheets” are exactly that–a sheet that lays on top of the fitted sheet covering the bed mattress and you sleep between the two. Of the two types of bed sheets available, the flat sheet is the more versatile as it can be used as a bottom sheet in addition to its normal purpose as a top sheet. Like fitted sheets, they are available in single, double, king, or super king sizes. A super king size flat sheet fits a 6′ 6″ bed quite nicely.
Beds in sizes other than those mentioned above are classified as “outsized.” They are usually custom made and can be either larger than a super king bed or much smaller than a single bed. You might be able to use standard flat sheets on some custom beds, but this, too, can present problems. If the sheet is too small, you won’t be able to tuck it in properly, meaning you will most likely find yourself sleeping on a bare mattress! If the sheet is too big, that could also create uncomfortable sleeping conditions in addition to making for a very sloppy bed! Neither is an acceptable option.
Fortunately, you can have custom sheets made for any size bed. They will look great, fit beautifully, and be more apt to stay in place. Custom bed sheets can be made in a number of fabrics, from flannel to silk, and are available in a wide array of colours.
Before placing an order for custom made bed sheets, it is of the utmost importance to accurately measure the mattress length, width, and height. You will want to make sure that there will be enough fabric to tuck under the mattress to keep the sheet in place.
When making the bed, start with placing the fitted sheet on the mattress, smoothing it out as much as possible. Then, the top for flat sheet is added. The wide hem of the sheet is placed at the head of the bed. If there is a design on only one side of the hem, place the sheet so the design is facing down toward the mattress. Spread the flat sheet over the bed, keeping the length of sheet hanging over the sides as even as possible. Tuck the bottom edge under the mattress and make hospital corners.
Place a blanket over the sheet. The top of the blanket should be placed approximately 8″ from the top of the sheet. Tuck the bottom edge of the blanket under the mattress and make hospital corners for it. Now, fold the top edge of the flat sheet over the top edge of the blanket. The finished side of the flat sheet is now showing. Place the duvet over all, add pillows, and you’re done!
Please remember that when you order custom made sheets, they are created one at a time to your specifications, so be sure to allow extra time for your order to be processed. It will be well worth the wait when you sleep in your perfectly made bed with sheets that fit. Like Goldilocks, you’ll know that your bed is “just right.”

Where Can You Find Custom Made Fitted Sheets?

If you have a standard size bed, your bed sheets should be easy to find. But what if your bed is a little different?

Custom Fitted Sheets
Custom Fitted Sheets can fit any size

The Basics of Bed Sheets

In its most basic form, bed sheets are rectangular pieces of cloth that are used to cover your mattress. In many places around the world, two sheets are used. The sheet that covers the mattress is referred to as a “bottom sheet.” A second sheet, laid on top of the mattress cover, is called a “top sheet” where you can then sleep comfortably in between the two sheets.

Sheets are typically available in two varieties–flat or fitted. The flat sheet is simply a rectangular piece of cloth, hemmed around the edges to stop fraying. You can use it either as a bottom sheet on the mattress with the excess folded in. Or as a top sheet to wrap around you and get snug once you’re in bed. If you go for a fitted sheet it has a singular purpose, that is it is made purely to go on the mattress. Our sheets are cut and made with four corners to help attach to the mattress, we then add elastic all around the hem to help it grip the mattress and stop it moving on the mattress.

Fitted sheets are commonly available in sizes to fit standard mattresses. These being:

  • Single
  • Double
  • Queen
  • King

walk into any superstore or high street bedding shop and these are the sizes you will find.  Although occaisionally you may come across Super King or California King size beds, if your lucky.

Bespoke Size Sheets

So if you have a bespoke or non standard bed, or you have an adjustable bed, what do you do? You’ll find it difficult to buy ready-made bed sheets for these types of beds because the sizes vary so widely. Luckily, with the rapid expansion of the internet and online shopping it is possible to find small businesses (like us :D) who can make bed sheets to any size. These Flat & Fitted sheets can be specially made to fit large or extra long beds, extra deep mattresses, or adjustable beds.
A Custom size bed sheet will be cut from the roll to whatever size you need. We make them in a variety of fabrics:

  • Poly Cotton (200 Thread Count)
  • 100% Egyptian Cotton (200 Thread Count)
  • 100% Egyptian Cotton (400 Thread Count)
  • 100% Egyptian Cotton (1000 Thread Count)

You can have any of the above in a wide range of colours. As mentioned before, our fitted sheets have the added bonus of elastic all the way around, which is especially helpful with adjustable beds. That means the sheet will not only fit properly, but will actually stay on the bed when it moves. We also add French seams resulting in a long lasting, high quality sheet.

Make sure you get your bed size right

It is important you don’t guess or estimate the size when ordering a bespoke size sheet, you might end up with an ill fitting sheet that will end up wrapping round you in the night. To ensure you receive a sheet that fits perfectly you MUST measure the mattress. Simply measure the mattress length from top to bottom; then the width from left to right across the widest part of the bed, and finally, the mattress depth. Record each measurement. It might make measuring easier if you have someone help to hold the tape measure. Also, when measuring be sure to keep the tape measure as flat as possible so you can be as accurate as possible.

Remember, when ordering custom made sheets, that it does take time for us to make them to your specifications.
In the end, though, the short wait will be worth it. You’ll be sleeping on a perfectly made sheet that stays in place while you sleep.

How do I wash & Protect My Duvet?

A duvet needs a Duvet Cover
Duvet Covers are great at looking after your duvet.

Look after your duvet with these handy washing and duvet cover tips.

Now that you’ve found the perfect duvet or quilt, it’s important to know how to properly care for it. Like any investment you want to get the most benefit out of your purchase. Proper care and a good duvet cover will prolong its usefulness with the result being that you will realize the benefits over many years to come.

Washing your duvet

The duvet should be cleaned according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Always read the label and follow the directions. Today, there are duvets that can be machine washed and dried. These are usually made with a man-made fillings of some sort. It’s best to use a commercial washer and dryer for this purpose because duvets are bulky and may, simply, not fit in a home washer or dryer.

Naturally filled duvets, such as Goose Down or Duck Feather, are the more difficult to clean. Again, they are usually too bulky for most home washers, and using a tumble dryer on a high heat can damage the filling (feathers and down deteriorate when exposed to heat.) If you look around online hand washing your duvet or quilt in a large sink or a bathtub is one suggested solution.  This issue then arises of how to dry it as air drying might be problematic if you don’t have the room to hang it up.

Duvets must be thoroughly dried because damp filling can mildew and mold and no one wants that to happen! It’s best to have your duvet professionally dry cleaned or professionally laundered. The good news is, that if you properly care for the duvet, professional cleaning will rarely be necessary. Many manufacturers recommend a professional cleaning at least once every five years. But, that requires proper care.

Find the Right Duvet Cover

So, how do you protect your investment? What’s the best way to care for a duvet? More good news! It’s easy. The best, most cost effective, way to protect your duvet is to use a duvet cover.  I’m sure you will know what this is but for those who don’t it’s basically two pieces of fabric stitched together on three sides (obviously, there’s a bit more to it, but you get the idea!). The cover slides over the duvet, keeping it protected from dirt, stains, rips, and tears. These covers come in a wide selection of styles, fabrics, colors, and designs. They are available in a range of standard sizes, as well as custom made sizes to fit any duvet.

Speaking of fit, it’s a good idea to take down the measurements of your duvet when you first receive it. This way, when you’re shopping for a cover, you can be sure you’re purchasing the right size. I’ve personally had an experience with a cover that was marked as a king, but wasn’t even close!

A fun benefit of using a duvet cover is having the ability to change the decor of your room with a simple change of the cover. You can easily change the way a room “feels” without completely redecorating. Go from dark winter colors to light, bright springtime in a snap.

Unlike the duvet, the majority of covers can be put into the household washer and dryer along with your regular sheets and pillowcases. However, to be on the safe side, be sure to read the label before cleaning the cover. There are some synthetic fabrics, such as rayon, that won’t do well in the dryer. It’s best to know that beforehand.

So, simply put, get yourself a couple of beautiful duvet covers.  Its probably the best and cost effective way of looking after and protecting your duvet.

Bed Covers – The Duvet

A duvet is a cover for a bed, much like a comforter. There are a few differences, however. The primary difference is that a duvet is made to be used with a cover of some sort. Much like a pillowcase covers a pillow, duvet covers go over the actual duvet to protect it and to match the bedroom decor. The cover is easily removed for cleaning or changing.

A duvet is constructed much like a quilt–two layers of fabric with a filling in between the layers. The three layers are then stitched together. Unlike quilts, however, a duvet is constructed to be used as a single bedcover. It replaces multiple layers of sheets, blankets, quilts, etc. that are used to keep warm while sleeping. Unless one is living in an extremely cold climate, a single duvet should keep a sleeper toasty warm in the winter months. In addition, the single layer results in quickly and easily making the bed every morning.

Duvets are made of a variety of materials. The outer shell is usually made of cotton, although silk or silk/cotton blends are sometimes used. A high thread count in the outer fabric  is preferable, as the fine filler can make its way through the threads of  lower-count fabrics.  So, the higher the thread count on the outer fabric, the better. Keep in mind, however, that a high thread count does not necessarily mean high quality. If the manufacturer of the fabric uses very fine threads, the fabric won’t be as durable and the duvet may suffer wear and tear in a short period of time.

The filler of a duvet is probably the most important factor you’ll want to consider. It should be natural, whenever possible. The filling is what provides the warmth of a duvet. Natural fill is always preferred, as it allows for breathability and warmth. A variety of synthetic fills are also available for those who suffer from allergies. Natural fillers include feathers, cotton, silk, or even wool. The best filler, however, is down. It tends to be lighter and fluffier while remaining breathable. Down also maintains a high Tog rating.

The Tog is the rating used to determine the warmth of a duvet. The higher the number, the warmer the duvet will be.  If the climate is warm, a Tog rating of five or less would be appropriate. If the climate is colder, a Tog higher than six is advised.

Another consideration is the actual construction of the duvet. Two of the many choices are box or channel construction. In box construction, the seams create a checkerboard of filled pockets. This keeps the filling firmly in place. In channel construction, the evenly spaced seams run the length of the duvet allowing the fill to move within the channels. So, for instance, if you get cold feet, you can move more fill to the bottom of the duvet to keep them warm.

A duvet is a wonderful, versatile investment. With proper care, it can last for many years. To help maintain the life of your duvet, it is advisable to use it with a cover. There are many styles, colors, and designs to choose from. The most difficult decision when choosing a duvet, might just be picking out the right cover!
