As the Net Grows, so do Beds!!

Large Four Poster BedThe days of the standard size bed and bed linen are fading fast it seems.

Consumers are now presented with more choice than ever when it comes to nearly everything they purchase online, this is no different when it comes to home furnishings and now it seems even more so with your choice of bed. Think back (if your old enough that is…) to the 70’s, 80’s and even the 90’s, most home furnishings like the traditional 3 piece suite came in in 1 style and 3 colour options (if you were lucky). It was the same with beds, every bed store would typically have a set of divan bases in single, double, king, superking, from these you chose a style and a colour and you were on your way. Anyone who wanted something a little different, a wrought iron bed or an adjustable bed, had to get out and about and seek out a specialist shop, making sure their pockets were deep enough to pay the extra for a ‘specialist’ bed.

Well those days are quickly becoming a distant memory, the advent of the internet and e-commerce has blown open the furniture and bed market to the one thing that every customer loves….choice! This growth in the market seems to fly in the face of the school of thinking that certain markets will struggle to sell on the internet, home furniture and textiles are one of these markets where ‘touch and feel’ are seen as one of the main selling factors, but this looks to be having less of an effect when online companies can offer no quibble return policies and even free delivery.

With beds it seems like the number of sites has been growing steadily as opposed to an fast expansion as with the case of electronics and other small easy to ship products, but now almost any type of bed and mattress available at the touch of a button (or at least a search of google). The choice is now so great that beds can be made to fit any room in the house, where in the past a standard double bed may have been to big for a room, a four foot bed can be easily ordered from sites such as mattressman.co.uk, the mattress can be ordered in a number of designs and types and be delivered within a few days. Other niche bed manufacturers are now enjoying fantastic business because their products are so unique that there are being easily sought for on the web, businesses such as bedmill.co.uk and revival beds stock circular and four poster beds that can be custom made to any size!

With this expansion in choice of beds comes the obligatory expansion in the choice of accessories. Bed linens are now easily available in sizes to fit any type of mattress in a number of fabrics from standard poly cotton percale to top quality 400 count cotton. In turn other accessories need to be the right size to fit a particular bed so larger quilts have become available along with extra long pillows, all of which need the correct size duvet sets and pillow cases.

As online stores offer more choice in beds it seems the days of the high street shop and its limited stocks may soon be a thing of the past.

A Mattress Protector Thats Waterproof, Anti Allergenic and Breathable. How’s Does That Work?!

One of the problems when it comes to waterproof mattress protectors is they are also air tight, meaning that nothing gets through. While this is great for protecting your mattress from spills and keeping bed bugs and dust mites at bay it also means that once you climb in to the bed for a well earned rest air can also get caught in the bed, once this air is trapped under your duvet or bed sheets it can’t move it then becomes warm from your own body heat, this in turn can make you warm and make for an uncomfortable nights sleep. This problem can be accentuated for those who are bed ridden or have to spend long periods of time in bed, the trapped air and heat can also lead to an increase in heat and bed sores.

Victoria Linen have recently launched a mattress protector that is the perfect remedy to this situation, using TENCEL fabric they now offer a mattress protector that is waterproof, anti allergenic and breathable. TENCEL is a unique fabric, derived from wood pulp it is a 100% natural product that allows air to pass through but is anti allergenic and 100% waterproof!

As with all Victoria Linen products the protector is available for standard size beds as well as longer, larger and adjustable beds, basically any width, length or depth is available. Head over to http://www.victorialinen.co.uk/acatalog/B-Sensible_Breat … for more information or to buy online

Beds with no limits……!

Ahoy! Its a Boat bed!
Ahoy! Its a Boat bed!
As a bed linen manufacturer we have had some made linen for some odd shaped beds in our time. From contoured beds in boats to beds that are shaped like boats (some with sails!) we have catered for some truely unique bed designs, it seems that where you want to sleep can be as unique as you like and only be limited by your imagination. With that in mind I though we’d post up and celebrate some of the weird and wonderful beds we’ve discovered of late…..

1. The magnetised bed

A Magnetic Bed

This Recently popped up in the Arthur remake although in a different guise and although it looks amazing if you want to live like Arthur it will set you back a nice $1.6 Million

2. The Gold Bed.

Gold Bed
A Golden Bed!? Well, nearly...
Yes, some say if you’ve got it flaunt it, while others may say more money than taste, (we’re not saying what side we’re on) this bed is coated in 24 carat Gold and features Swarovski crystals along the sideboard. It’s equipped with a DVD player and Bose sound system, Blu-ray player, Playstation 3, a foldaway plasma television coated in gold and can even be connected to the internet. In short, its got the lot and its a snip (relatively speaking) at only $676,550!

3. The Fairytale Coach.

Fairytale Coach Bed
Fairytale Coach Bed
We’ve kept the last one for the kids with this luxurious coach bed that probably wouldnt have looked out of place at the end of any fairy tale. What isn’t a happy ending though is the price which will set you back a mighty $47,000 for a bed that within a year might possibly have the childs feet sticking out the windows (growth spurts permitting)!!

We know there’s plenty more of these beds to be found so no doubt this topic will come up again in the future, in the meantime let us know in the comments below if you find any note worthy beds dotted around the web.

A pillow can do much more…..

Pillows
Body Pillow
Pillows, you probably use them at least once a day, its more than likely the last thing your head hits at night and what you wake up on in the morning. With a bit of imagination however pillows can be put to a lot more use than that, for instance during the latter stages of pregnancy it can be very hard to sleep with baby causing slight discomfort when your lying down, pregnancy pillows or body pillows can help with this, giving Mum something to rest her bump against as well as her head. These specialist pillow can come in many shapes such as a ‘c’ shaped pillow or as just a longer 3ft or 3ft 6 large pillow, coupled up with a larger pillow case they can bring extra comfort in those latter days of your full term.

These longer pillows can also be used as bolster pillows keeping you upright in bed, these are always useful for those who want to read in bed of remain comfortable over long periods. The large 3ft pillows and 3ft 6 pillows are also ideal for Superking 6ft 6 and Emperor 7ft beds, these look more suited to a large bed as standard pillows tend to look to small. The same can be said for inbetween sized beds such as 4ft beds, extra long pillows give a better look to the bed where standard pillows look out of place.

Velcro Bed Valance – Why are they better?

Our velcro bed valance is a great alternative to the heavy lifting involved with normal bed valances.

Although advances in bed linen aren’t seen as the biggest leaps in human evolution, when it comes to home life every little helps! Valances when placed on the bed can be troublesome. Your whole mattress has to be taken off the bed for the base valance to go on, this usually means the fitted sheet (and mattress protector if you have one) will come off as well. Once you’ve got valance is in place. Your mattress and bedding has to go back on.

Easy fit bed valance

Sounds like a strain? That’s because it usually is! Especially with larger mattresses, it can be even more of a problem for the elderly and those less able. Our new velcro bed valance (also known as an easy fit valance) is a very useful alternative that takes away all the hassle of lugging your mattress around the bedroom.

Velcro bed valance styles and colours

Styles and colours of velcro bed valance
Velcro bed valance – styles and colours
We have a great range of velcro bed valances available online. Our UK base manufactures 100% cotton and 50/50 poly cotton velcro bed valances fabrics in several colours and designs. Each come in a range of colours to suit most bedrooms, with 12 available in poly cotton and white and ivory available in 100% cotton. On our webpage the style of the valance can also be chosen with 3 designs available on 1 site, as shown in the image frilled, box pleated and single pleat designs can be selected.

With our sticky velcro strip placed around the top of the bed and the other part of our velcro stitched into the valance, it can simply be stuck around the edge of the bed to give the illusion of a full base valance. Then when its time to wash your valance simply remove the valance via the velcro, get it laundered, then re-attach it without the problems of remove and replacing your mattress! So there you have it, why fight with a mattress when you want to wash your valance when a velcro attached valance will make it so much easier.

Large beds need bed linens!

If you walked into any supermarket or high street bed linen store these days you would be under the empression that only single, double, king and superking size bed linens exist!! Well, I’m here to tell you its not the case. We know bed linen measurements have changed, three quarter beds or 4ft beds have been around for a while, being a useful alternative to a double when the bedroom isnt quite big enough, but theres so many more sizes of large bed available now. There’s the emperor bed at 7 foot wide and the king of all beds, the caesar bed measuring at a whopping 8 foot wide. Large bed linens and large pillows for these beds can be hard to find and almost impossible to locate on the high street, mercifully with the rise of the internet and the ability of small niche retailers to get there products available these extra long bed linens are now available to a world wide audience. UK bed linens, where they were traditionally manufactured in lancashire have a haven of small business that produce the finest bed linens for longer and larger beds.

Mattress Toppers, making your bed even better!

Mattress Topper
Mattress Topper
Mattress Toppers can be a great addition to any bed, not only can they help protect and prolong the life of your mattress, but they can give you an extra layer of soft padding that can enhance and deepen your nights sleep!

Mattress Toppers can come in various fillings from a standard polyester foam filled mattress topper to horse tail hair and lambs wool mattress toppers. They can be used to give added comfort or used as a therapedic mattress topper.

While polyester foam filled toppers may be adequate in adding comfort to your bed they can have there problems, for instance polyester isn’t as effective when it comes to regulating temperature as natural fibres. Dust mites can also become more prelevant in polyester mattress toppers however this can be remedied by a good anti allergenic mattress protector or by regular cleaning of the mattress topper.

Lambs wool mattress toppers are much more effective at regulating temperature and dispersing moisture over the course of a night and also have a longer life when compared to polyester. Current thinking suggests use of best quality horse tail hair within the topper to give it a superior quality and longevity. While the use of horse tail hair mattress topper isnt something most people would think, the properties of horse tail hair when combined with lambs wool give the mattress topper extra spring and recoil making it truely top of the range for comfort and long life.

While mattress toppers can be easily found for standard single, double and king bed toppers for unusual and outsize beds are rarer to come accross. A good site that supplies mattress toppers in a wide range of sizes can be found here
