From Bedspreads to bed Runners, Throws and Eiderdowns

It was probably from the Renaissance when bed linens were first used to not only to give warmth but also to give a decorative effect to a bed and bedroom. In those days silks and velvets were stuffed with feathers and in some cases straw to make bedding that not only trapped heat but also would be the height of luxury.

Over the years the bedspread has taken on more traditional forms, most notably in the shape of the eiderdown, where patterns would be stitched over material filled with either man made or natural fibres, the eiderdown would only cover the top of the bed leaving the sides open. More modern bedspreads are made to fit the entire bed covering the top and the sides, this can be made as a flat bed throw where a large piece of fabric is pattern matched and backed, this will cover the whole bed and can be folded back to also act as a bed runner across the foot of the bed.

Fitted Bedspreads are also popular, these are made with a piece that covers the top of the bed and then has a frill that runs around the outside and will cover the sides of the bed to the floor. A more modern take on this sort of bed decoration is the bed runner which as the name suggests runs along the foot of the bed, this is purely a decorative linen that has become more popular with the influence of hotel chic bedding.

Many examples of these types of bedspreads can be found over at victoria linen co where bespoke bedspreads are manufactured in standard and larger sizes.

Bed Linen: Fabric Thread Count, is Higher Better?

High Thread Count Cotton
High Thread Count Cotton

Thread count means the number of horizontal and vertical threads counted in a square inch of fabric. Using this method of grading the quality of linen is a good way of grading your bed linens quality but only up to a point. We at Victoria Linen have considered 400 count Egyptian Cotton to be the best material to give the ultimate in quality and comfort while also using 200 Thread Count Poly Cotton as a more easy care fabric that also has a long life and is resistant to pilling.

The common perception is the higher the thread count the higher quality of bed linen and this is true with lower grade fabrics. Thread counts of linens starting at say 70 threads to the inch will be more susceptible to pilling and will definitely feel of a lesser quality when compared to higher TC’s.

However, as the thread count does increase the quality and feel of the fabrics isnt as apparant and after you get past 400 count linens manufacturers tend to ‘stretch the truth’ as to how many threads there really are to the inch. This is because there is only so much room in that square inch for the threads to go, thread width only allows up to 400 threads to fit in that small space. The way some manufacturers get round this is to twist two fibres together when weaving and this way achieve an 800 or even 1000 thread count bed linens, but research has shown weaving like this doesn’t achieve a better quality and is a bit of a misnomer as a guide for quality.

Longer and Larger Pillows

Longer & Larger Pillows and Pillow Cases
Longer & Larger Pillows and Pillow Cases

As beds become longer and larger so have customers demands for a pillow to fit. As standard pillows all come in the set size of 50 x 75cm this is all very well for standard size beds but as bigger and wider beds become more popular these pillows can seem lost on the bed, or you’ll need more and more of them across the width of the bed. As part of our service to customers with larger beds Victoria Linen also stock a range of pillows ideal to fit beds such as 3’6″ width, 5’6″ all the way up to 7′ width beds. We stock 92 x 50cm Pillows (36 x 19″), which are ideal for wider singles and for beds fo 6′ (183cm) width for example. We also stock 104 x 50cm (42 x 19″) which again are ideal for 4′ (48cm) beds and also 7′ (214cm) and beyond!

UK retailers and supermarkets tend to only sell bedding in standard UK sizes (UK single, double, king and super king) so finding ikea bed sheets can be a difficult task. Sure, you can buy them at an ikea store but some stores might be miles from where you live.  Also, you may be looking for more than what Ikea have to offer, (there colour range and fabric choice can be limited.

Ikea also offer mattress toppers that lay on top of the mattress and can increase the mattress depth up to 13 inches.  For these it would always be best to buy a bed sheet that is deep enough to accommodate the topper and your mattress.

All the above sizes can cause a problem when trying to find fitted sheets and other bedding that fits correctly. UK retailers primarily only deal with standard single, double, king and superking sizes.

Luckily, companies like Victoria Linen offer a made to measure service in bed linen where the fabric is cut and sewn to the customers exact requirements.

Why can’t you get duvets in larger sizes?

Egyptian bedding sheetsAs is the tradition with beds and bedding, the general rule is that you can only have four sizes of duvet: Single, Double, King & Super king. At Victoria Linen we try to buck this trend at every opportunity, we believe that beds and bed linen should be made to fit the customer and we know that they come in more than four sizes! We stock duvets in a range of sizes that fit the most popular in-between sizes of beds, these include:

137 x 214cm to fit 92 x 200cm (3’x6’6″) beds
153 x 214cm to fit 107 x 200cm (3’6″x6’6″) beds
168 x 214cm to fit 122 x 200cm (4’x6’6″) beds
280 x 234cm to fit 214 x 214cm (7′ x 7′) beds

If none of these duvet sizes can fit we can have the appropriate size made up so that duvet is the perfect size. All our duvets are made with 100% cotton casings and come in Hollofibre, Duck Feather & Down or Goosedown fillings.

As the market for outsized and inbetween beds grows so has the demand for these sizes of duvet and we think it will continue as the market grows.
