Which Type of Bed Valance Do I Need?

Different valances can create a similar finished appearance, but they do not all fit the bed in the same way. Use the table below to find the most suitable construction for your bed.

Base Valances and Bed Skirts

A base valance is also known as a platform valance or bed skirt. It has a flat fabric platform that sits over the divan base and underneath the mattress. The attached skirt hangs down around the sides and foot of the bed.

This traditional construction stays in position when the fitted sheet and other bedding are changed. It is a good choice for standard divan bases and customers who want a decorative valance that does not need to be removed regularly.

Fitted Valance Sheets

A valance sheet combines a fitted sheet with an attached decorative skirt. It fits directly over the mattress, making it much easier to remove and wash than a platform valance positioned underneath the mattress.

The fitted section is made to the mattress width, length and depth. The skirt drop is measured separately from the top of the mattress to where you want the fabric to finish.

Deep Valance Sheets and Extra-Deep Base Valances

The term “deep valance” can describe two different requirements:

• Deep valance sheet: a fitted valance sheet made for a deep mattress, pillow-top mattress or mattress topper.
• Extra-deep base valance: a platform valance with a longer skirt drop for a high divan base.

Mattress depth and skirt drop are separate measurements. A deep mattress does not necessarily require a longer base valance, and a high bed base does not necessarily have a deep mattress.

Choose a deep valance sheet if the product needs to fit over a thick mattress. Choose an extra-deep base valance if you need a traditional bed skirt with a longer drop.

Split Corner Valances for Bedsteads

Metal and wooden bedsteads often have visible corner posts, side rails or a footboard that prevents a standard base valance from hanging correctly.

Our split corner bedstead valances have carefully positioned openings that allow the skirt to fall neatly around the structure of the bed. They are suitable for iron bedsteads, wooden frames, four-poster beds and footboard beds.

Choose practical easy-care polycotton or heavy Panama fabric for a fuller, more structured drape.

Easy-Fit Velcro Bed Valances

An easy-fit Velcro valance attaches around the outside of the bed base using supplied sticky-backed Velcro tape. It does not have a fabric platform underneath the mattress.

This means the skirt can be fitted, removed and washed without lifting a heavy mattress. Easy-fit valances are particularly useful for large mattresses, guest accommodation, rental properties and beds that are difficult to move.

Specialist versions are also available for adjustable beds, where the valance must be positioned so that it does not interfere with the moving sections.

How to Measure for a Bed Valance

The correct measurement method depends on how the valance fits.

Most customers choose a skirt drop that finishes approximately 1–2cm above the floor. This helps conceal the base without allowing the fabric to drag.

Frilled, Pleated and Heavy Fabric Valances

The construction determines how the valance fits, while the finish and fabric determine its appearance.

• Frilled valances: gathered fabric creates a softer and more traditional look.
• Pleated valances: straighter lines produce a cleaner, tailored finish.
• Heavy fabric valances: substantial Panama fabric creates a fuller and more structured drape.
• Easy-care valances: practical polycotton is straightforward to wash and quick to dry.
