What Size Is a UK King Fitted Sheet?

A standard UK king mattress measures approximately 5ft wide by 6ft 6in long, or 153 × 200cm. The fitted sheet must match the mattress width and length as well as its depth.

This category is intended for standard UK king beds. It is not designed for:

• 160 × 200cm European or IKEA king mattresses
• 6ft × 6ft 6in UK super king beds

Choose the Right Depth for Your King Mattress

A deep fitted sheet needs to be deeper than the mattress so that sufficient material can reach underneath. Measure the complete mattress depth, including any protector or topper that will remain beneath the sheet.

If the complete measurement falls close to the upper limit, choosing the next pocket depth will normally make the sheet easier to fit and provide more material underneath the mattress.

35cm Deep King Fitted Sheets

A 35cm pocket is suitable for moderately deep king mattresses measuring up to approximately 27cm. It provides additional tuck-under without leaving excessive loose fabric beneath the bed.

A 40cm or approximately 16-inch pocket is a popular choice for deep hybrid and pillow-top king mattresses. It is generally suitable for a complete mattress depth of approximately 28–33cm.

50cm Extra Deep King Fitted Sheets

A 50cm or approximately 20-inch pocket is intended for very thick king mattresses and beds fitted with substantial toppers. It is generally suitable for a complete depth of approximately 34–43cm.

60cm Ultra-Deep King Fitted Sheets

A 60cm or approximately 24-inch pocket is designed for exceptionally deep king mattresses and heavily layered beds. It is generally suitable for a complete mattress depth of approximately 44–53cm.

How to Measure a King Size Mattress

Take three measurements before selecting your fitted sheet:

1. Width: Measure across the widest point of the mattress.
2. Length: Measure from the head to the foot of the mattress.
3. Depth: Measure from the bottom edge to the highest point.

Leave any mattress protector or topper in place when measuring the depth. These layers contribute to the complete height that the fitted sheet must cover.

Do not rely only on the word “king”. A UK king, European king, long king and super king all require different fitted sheet dimensions.

Extra Deep King Fitted Sheets for Mattress Toppers

A mattress topper can add several centimetres to the height of a king size bed. This may make an ordinary fitted sheet too shallow even if it fitted correctly before the topper was added.

Measure the mattress, protector and topper together. For example, a king mattress measuring 30cm combined with a 5cm topper has a complete depth of approximately 35cm. A 50cm fitted sheet would normally provide a more secure tuck-under than a 40cm sheet.

If you regularly remove the topper, remember that a fitted sheet selected for the combined depth may feel looser when used on the mattress alone.

Why Does My King Size Fitted Sheet Keep Coming Off?

A king fitted sheet can pull away from the corners when either the mattress dimensions or the pocket depth are incorrect.

Common causes include:

• Using a standard-depth sheet on a thick king mattress
• Not including the mattress topper when measuring
• Using a UK king sheet on a 160 × 200cm European king
• Choosing a pocket equal to the mattress depth with no tuck-under
• The elasticated edge sitting against the mattress side

A 160 × 200cm European king mattress is approximately 7cm wider than a standard UK king. A UK king fitted sheet will therefore be too narrow, even though both mattresses are commonly described as king size.
