An Essential Guide To Fitted Sheet Sizes & Depths

Picking the right fitted sheet for your bed is often a challenge. While these handy sheets perfectly complement your bed linen, choosing the wrong size can also cause a number of issues. In this post, we’ll cover the different fitted sheet sizes and depths, plus how to measure your mattress to ensure the right fit.

Why it’s important to select the right fitted sheet size?

If you purchase the wrong fitted sheet size, you’ll either get one of two problems. First, sheets that are too big and baggy could work their way off the mattress as you move around in your sleep. Secondly, sheets that are too small may only just stretch over the mattress. This not only means they’ll pop off at the corners, but the material is also under more pressure, which can affect its quality and lifespan.

So, how do you achieve the correct fit for fitted bed sheets? Our handy guide takes you through selecting the best size for your mattress and different fitted types available.

What sizes are fitted sheets available in?

Fitted sheets are designed to fit over most mattresses. At Victoria Linen, we have a wide selection of fitted sheets that fit over various mattresses sizes, from small single up to 8ft Caesar. Plus, you can get IKEA sizes and custom options if your bed doesn’t quite fit the usual dimensions.

What are the different depths of fitted sheets?

The mattress size is just one factor when selecting a fitted sheet - depth is also important. Mattresses come in a variety of depths, and choosing the right one ensures the sheet tucks perfectly underneath.

Fitted sheets are designed to accommodate standard depths and extra deep mattresses. For example, at Victoria Linen, our range caters up to 46cm deep. This ensures even extra deep beds don’t have any issues with small fitted sheets or having to buy flat sheets. If your mattress is deeper than this, then our made-to-measure service can help you get the perfect size for your bed.

What is a deep-fitted sheet?

A deep-fitted sheet is created specifically for thicker mattresses. They are also handy for mattresses with an additional foam topper that requires covering.

What depth is a deep-fitted sheet?

The depth of fitted sheets varies between manufacturers. However, many deep and extra-deep fitted sheets are available for mattress depths between 30cm and 46cm.

How to measure your mattress for a fitted sheet

Whether you’re a first-time sheet buyer or have purchased one before, fitted sheet sizing can be confusing. So, to help you get the right size, measuring your mattress correctly will give you the best chance of selecting a perfectly fitting design.

  1. Before you get the tape measure out, take all the sheets and bed linen off the bed. This will give you a blank canvas and ensures accurate measurements.
  2. Next, measure the width of the mattress. As the edges of most beds curve slightly – take this measurement at the widest point (usually the middle).
  3. Then measure the length. This is the longest measurement, and again it’s best to do this at the widest point or middle of the bed.
  4. Lastly, measure the depth (which is explained in more detail below).

How to measure fitted sheet depth

Measuring the depth is pretty straightforward and is typically done at the corner of the mattress. Measure vertically and include the top seam and bottom seam. In addition, if you have a mattress topper, measure from the top seam of the topper to get the correct dimensions.

Fitted sheet size chart

Fitted sheet measurements can vary depending on where you buy them. But, most standard sizes fall into similar ranges. After taking your mattress dimensions, check out our handy fitted sheet size chart to give you an idea of what size you might need.

Mattress size

Fitted sheet size

Single

91 x 190 x 30cm

Double

137 x 190 x 30cm

King

152 x 200 x 30cm

Super King

183 x 200 x 30cm

Emperor

200 x 200 x 30cm

Of course, if you require a deeper fitted sheet, the depth measurement will differ from the above.

Deep fitted sheets vs fitted sheets

When deciding what depth to buy, opting for a slightly bigger size can be tempting to ensure it fits snugly under the mattress. However, when choosing either deep-fitted or standard-fitted sheets, always pick the right size for the bed.

While a few extra centimetres might not seem a lot, this can mean the difference between a perfectly smooth linen finish and a baggy, creased sheet.

Fitted valance sheets

Alongside traditional fitted sheets, there’s also an option for fitted valance sheets. This design features a fitted sheet that sits on top of the mattress and includes a draped cover to hide the divan.

Opting for a fitted valance makes life easier too. You don’t need to lift a heavy mattress to reach the valance – everything can be removed with the standard bed linen.

Like regular fitted sheets, fitted valance sheets come in standard bed sizes and can be customised to fit the size and drop required.
