Who Needs a 50cm Deep Fitted Sheet?

A 50cm deep fitted sheet is designed for beds that are too substantial for an ordinary deep-pocket sheet. It is particularly useful for thick pillow-top and hybrid mattresses, as well as mattresses combined with deep toppers or protectors.

Our 50cm fitted sheets are generally recommended for a complete mattress depth of approximately 34–43cm. The remaining pocket depth allows sufficient material to reach underneath the mattress so the elasticated hem can grip securely.

You may need a 50cm fitted sheet if:

• Your 40cm fitted sheet feels tight or pulls away from the corners

Is a 50cm Fitted Sheet the Same as a 20-Inch Sheet?

A 50cm pocket is approximately 19.7 inches deep, so it is commonly described as a 20-inch deep fitted sheet. Both terms normally refer to the same approximate sheet depth.

The 50cm measurement describes the full pocket of the sheet rather than the maximum mattress height. Some fabric must sit underneath the mattress, so a 50cm fitted sheet is generally best for mattresses measuring approximately 34–43cm.

How to Measure for a 50cm Deep Fitted Sheet

Measure the full height of the bed before ordering. Include every layer that will remain underneath the fitted sheet, including the mattress protector and topper.

1. Remove the duvet and existing fitted sheet.
2. Leave the mattress protector and topper in place.
3. Measure vertically from the bottom edge of the mattress to its highest point.
4. Measure at several points if the mattress has a rounded or padded top.
5. Choose a sheet pocket deeper than the complete measurement.

If the combined depth is approximately 34–43cm, a 50cm fitted sheet should normally provide enough material to tuck securely underneath. If the measurement exceeds approximately 43cm, consider a 60cm extra deep fitted sheet.

Should You Choose a 40cm, 50cm or 60cm Sheet?

If your measurement falls close to the upper limit, choosing the next pocket depth can make the sheet easier to fit and provide a more generous tuck-under.

50cm Fitted Sheets for Mattresses with Toppers

A mattress topper can add several centimetres to the total height of a bed. A 50cm fitted sheet is therefore a popular choice for thick mattresses combined with substantial memory foam, feather, down or hollowfibre toppers.

Always measure the mattress, protector and topper together. For example, a 35cm mattress combined with a 5cm topper has a complete depth of approximately 40cm and should normally suit a 50cm pocket.

If the combined depth exceeds approximately 43cm, move up to a 60cm fitted sheet rather than stretching a 50cm sheet tightly around the mattress.

Why Do Fitted Sheets Keep Coming Off Deep Mattresses?

A fitted sheet usually comes away from the corners because its pocket is too shallow for the complete mattress depth. When the material is stretched tightly across the bed, the elasticated hem cannot reach underneath and grip securely.
