What Mattress Depth Will a 40cm Fitted Sheet Fit?

The sheet pocket needs to be deeper than the mattress itself because some of the fabric must reach underneath the mattress for the elasticated hem to grip securely.

If your mattress measures close to 40cm deep, a 40cm pocket will usually be too shallow because there will be little or no fabric remaining to tuck underneath.

Is a 40cm Fitted Sheet the Same as a 16-Inch Deep Sheet?

Why Does My Fitted Sheet Keep Coming Off?

One of the most common reasons fitted sheets come away from the mattress corners is insufficient pocket depth.

A sheet may technically stretch over the top and sides of a mattress but still be too shallow to stay securely in place. If the elasticated edge sits against the side of the mattress rather than underneath it, movement during the night can pull the corners free.

A correctly sized 40cm sheet gives the elasticated hem additional material to reach underneath the mattress and hold more securely.

40cm Fitted Sheets for Mattress Toppers

A mattress topper increases the total depth that your fitted sheet needs to cover. If you use a topper, measure the mattress and topper together before choosing your sheet depth.

If the combined measurement is approximately 28–33cm, a 40cm pocket may provide the additional tuck-under needed for a secure fit.
