Anti Allergy and waterproof mattress protectors of the past have been hampered by one factor, they can be very uncomfortable! Old mattress protectors were made of plastic derivatives with possibly a cotton layer, the main problem with these is that air cannot move through them. Why does this matter? Well, if air cannot move in the bed once you are in it, it becomes warm. This in turn makes you warm, possibly making you too warm and uncomfortable, affecting your nights sleep.

TENCEL fabric’s unique qualities mean it protects from dust mites and other allergens and also repels water. But it does all this while also allowing air to pass through its fibres. The breathable quality of the mattress protector means that no air is trapped and the temperature is regulated. What else can TENCEL do?

Tencel fabric (also known as Lyocell) is a man made artificial fibre in the same vein as Nylon or Polyester. But the difference with this fabric is it has been manufactured from 100% natural wood based cellulose. Because the protector is manufactured from wood pulp it is 100% biodegradable and is considered a natural fibre. The fabric can be made with short or long fibres, when manufactured with short fibres it feels very cotton like, Tencel made with longer fibres give a smooth and silky feel and can be used in elegant formal wear (see this dress for instance)

TENCEL failures

Tencel falls short against natural fibres however when we come to dying processes. The fabric has a low surface energy meaning that it doesn’t bind well which means coloured Tencel fades over time. Bed linen manufacturers such as Victoria Linen only offer their Tencel Protectors in White due to this.
