Choosing the best filling for your duvet to suit you perfectly!

When it comes to choosing the perfect duvet there is a lot to think about and it can be a confusing experience. Whenever someone mentions tog ratings, thread count or different filling types to you, how do you respond? Just with a confused look on your face? Well don’t worry because that’s why we are here; many people don’t understand all of the technical terms to a duvet however it’s all very simple once you know about it.

First of all, you have your tog rating, which is basically how warm the comforter is; these can range from 3 tog up to 13.5 tog. As you can probably guess, the lower tog rating means it is more suitable for those hot nights in summer to keep you cooler and the higher tog rating is best in winter time keeping you toasty warm wrapped in your duvet.

Then you have all of the different fillings, the main types of filling are hollow fibre, micro fibre blend. duck feather and down and goose down. All of these suit different people and certain filling are more luxurious than others.

Duck Feather And Down Duvet

Hollow fibre duvets are filled with 100% polyester hollow fibre and have a 100% cotton cambric cover giving it a soft touch and meaning it gently wraps around the body for great comfort. These types of duvets are easy to wash at home and don’t need as much care and are priced cheaper than others meaning they are good for families or people on a budget.

Micro fibre blend duvets are a little more upmarket than the hollow fibre and are made with a filling of 90% polyester and 10% Lyocell with the cover at 55% modal and 45% cotton. The filling gives a down-like feel to the duvet and its provides cushioning softness and comfort and is very lightweight. This type of duvet is breathable which means it is great for people who range from being too warm and too cold when sleeping, as it regulates the body to it’s optimum temperature throughout the night.

The next best filling for a luxurious duvet is the duck feather and down; this is the most basic natural filled duvet which is cheaper than goose down. It consists of 90% duck feather and 10% duck down with a 100% cotton cambric cover with a 233 thread count. This type of duvet isn’t the lightest of all but because of that it allows you to get that cosy ‘tucked in’ feeling.

If you want the most luxurious duvet then a Hungarian goose down or Canadian snow goose down duvet is for you! This is the best filling. The Canadian snow goose down is the most luxurious of any duvets, as it is filled with 100% Canadian snow goose down, giving you the highest quality in every way. It has a thread count of 310 and is a soft, fluffy duvet with superior qualities. Whereas the Hungarian goose down duvet is the 2nd best as it is filled with 90% Hungarian goose down and 10% fine feather. It is also lightweight (that much that some people say it’s like sleeping under a fluffy cloud) and long lasting as is the Canadian snow goose and it is naturally breathable.

Due to the higher qualities of the duck feather and down and the goose down duvets they need to be cared for specially. it is recommended that you seek specialist cleaning to provide the best care; this will allow your duvet to last longer. If cared for properly then they can last up to 20-30 years, definitely worth the money!

We even supply these luxury duvets in large sizes for emperor beds. An emperor duvet is a large duvet made to fit a larger bed, usually around 6’6″ to 7′ beds, what can also be known as a super kingsize duvet. They are stocked in a wide range of tog ratings starting at 3 tog going up to 13.5 tog, the 3 tog, 4.5 tog, 6 tog and 9 tog are all connectable and can be combined to make an ‘all seasons’ large duvet cover.

So why not go and take a look at our range of duvets now that you understand all of the technical terms. 1. I am looking for a down duvet that has not been created using any down /feathers plucked from live birds (as happens in Hungary and China),. Do you have any such duvets or ones that are certificated as ‘cruelty free; ?
