Following a long recovery, he was assigned to Washington, D.C. to serve in the British Embassy. A chance meeting with British novelist, C.S. Forrester, encouraged Dahl to write the tales of his Africa adventures. He did and the writing career of Roald Dahl began in earnest. After some success with articles, novellas, and short stories, Dahl tried his hand at children’s stories beginning with James and the Giant Peach’s publication in 1960. James was followed by a train of wonderful and inventive children’s stories loved by readers around the world.
